Successful Debut of CIUC at Nelson Multicultural Festival

(Confucius Institute at University of Canterbury)

The annual Nelson Multicultural Festival with the theme of Race Unity Day was held in Victoria Park on 11 March 2012. The Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury (CIUC) had been invited to this special event by the organizers the previous year when CIUC organized a Chinese Culture Day at the local high school. On this occasion, CIUC recruited a volunteer performance troupe from among UC Chinese students.  The troupe performed a Chinese Zheng (harp) solo and folk dance. Meanwhile, at the request of the organizer, ICUC also introduced to Nelson the lion dance group from Christchurch. Also present at the event was Mr Yucai Li, the Education Consul from the Consulate-General of P R China in Christchurch.

Despite the continuous rain since early morning, the festival, which commenced at 11 a.m., was well attended. Following the opening speech, delivered by the Mayor of Nelson, Aldo Miccio, overseas students from more than 40 countries were introduced on to the stage where each of them greeted the audience in their mother tongue. At the same time, the calligraphy stall hosted by CIUC was crowded with visitors lining up to have their names written in Chinese. Many of them said that they would frame the calligraphy work and hang it at home, while others were so fascinated by the Chinese characters that they were anxious to know whether CIUC would be holding a calligraphy class in Nelson.

On the central stage, the Chinese Zheng solo “Liuyang River”, with folk dance, played by CI volunteers Ai Yifan and Zheng Qingzhi, enchanted the audience and won enthusiastic applause. After the CI performance, a number of local Chinese residents came to the Confucius Institute stall to express their support. Nisa Rose, a teacher from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, said “It’s awesome! There was no Chinese voice on the stage of the Multicultural Festival in the past. Your performance is wonderful.”

The Nelson public were in a high state of expectation over the lion dance, in which a brightly coloured lion overwhelmed the audience with animated actions. The audience rewarded this performance with resounding applause.

CIUC’s successful involvement in the Nelson Race Unity Day owed a lot to the New Zealand-China Friendship Society’s Nelson Branch, who arranged their annual meeting on the same weekend so that they could invite CIUC guests to their meeting. On behalf of the CIUC, Deputy Director Hu Hong briefly outlined the CI’s goals, mission and commitment to the members of NZCFS, and described in detail the activities carried out by CIUC in the South Island. The presentation aroused keen interest from among the attendees, who expressed their willingness to cooperate with the Confucius Institute in providing better services to the Nelson public in the areas of communication and exchange between China and New Zealand.
