First English Speaking Contest for Younger Members of Faculty of HUST was Successful Held

To put the guiding principles from 19th National Congress of CPC into action and enhance professional and high-quality skills for our younger members of faculty, International Exchange Center and School of International Education work jointly to organize the First English Speaking Contest on May 18th, with the theme of “Stories of HUST on International Exchanges”. In their speeches, the contestants told their own stories on the international exchanges in HUST in accordance to their own work.
Before the contest starts, Professor Chen Jianguo, vice President of HUST, addresses an enthusiastic speech. He points out that with the increase of China’s comprehensive national power, we have numerous opportunities to participate in international higher education exchanges. It requires us to share our hard-working and innovative stories in a universal language that is acceptable to the international community. This contest offers a favorable platform for younger members of faculty to keep learning and improving their management and service level, and to make greater contribution to the initiative of “world-class university” of HUST in the future.
The finalists are ten younger members of staff who have already got promotion from the preliminary contests that held by International Exchange Center and School of International Education respectively. At the same time, the contest committee invites the honorable judges, they are: Professor Hu Hong, the first Chinese director of Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury; Associate Professor Jiang Jing, former Chinese director of Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury; Doctor Chen Jie, vice director of Academic Committee Office; Associate Professor Wang Yuhong from School of Foreign Languages of HUST; Associate Professor Dong Wei from School of Foreign Languages of HUST; Doctor Wang Shenggao, from Florida International University.
Mr. Wang Xuedong, vice director of Publicity Department, Mr. Yao Tan, vice secretary of Youth League Committee, Ms. Hu Yi, vice chair of Labor Union of Administrative Organizations，Professor Liao Xiaofei, Director of International Exchange Center, Mr. Wang Gongnan, the Secretary of CPC General Branch of School of International Education, Mr. Liu Junhua, Dean of School of International Education and Mr.Yu Hailin, the CEO of Yuyuan Gezhi Company also attend the contest.
The contest is divided into two parts. The first part is five minutes topic speech and the second is two minutes question and answer session.
Yan Wei, from School of International Education, tells us the story about a Sri Lankan father and his son in two generations who both have a further study in HUST. The father, Mr. Dharama, was conferred Doctor’s Degree from School of Economics. He also actively promotes the “Belt and Road Initiative”. Meantime, his son little Dharama enjoys Chinese culture after his carefree childhood in Primary School Attached to HUST. Now he studies in School of Electronic Information and Communications.
Xu Jiasi, a teacher from Foreign Chinese Teaching Center, delivered a speech that an Iraqi Student, Hussein, comes to HUST to study from far away after overcoming mountains of difficulties. She wants to tell us that everyone, with confidence, has a power to make his dream come true.
Wan Tian, the staff from International Exchange Center, tells us how to make good use of every educational visit to enhance the international influence of HUST.
Peng Yumeng shares her thoughts on how to deepen international cooperation following the principle “think globally, act locally;” Lan Hanghang introduces Zhu Jiusi's educational thoughts and its profound influence; Cui Mei tells the moving story of Cui Kun, an academician who devoted his whole life to steel materials; Chang Bo delivers a speech on how sports activities in HUST contribute to international exchanges. Dai Shuqiong shows the well-known University of California Berkeley from the perspective of students in HUST; Xue Jiajia addressed HUST’s participation in Chinese foreign aid projects; Zhao Jie introduced HUST’s charm from her own view. The high spirits and brilliant speeches win big rounds of applause from audiences.
After the fierce competition, Yan Wei won top prize of the contest; Wan Tian and Xu Jiasi won the first prize; Peng Yumeng, Lan Hanghang and Xue Jiajia won the second prize; Zhao Jie, Chang Bo, Cui Mei and Dai Shuqiong won the third prize. 18 younger members of staff including Su Zhaoming and Ai Xiao etc. who stood out from preliminary contest won the excellent prizes.
After that, Professor Jiang Jing gives us a comment on every contestant. Lu Hao, a Master Degree Candidate from School of Foreign Languages hosts this speech contest.
This contest not only helps the Younger Members of Faculty from the School of International Education and International Exchange Center to have a deep understanding of their own work, but also inspires everyone to expand their outlook and innovate their skills, so as to embark on a new journey to actively establish HUST to be a world – class university with Chinese characteristics.
