On April 25th, three international students from Tongji Hospital (Musa, PHD from Uganda; Kang Yichen, PHD from Pakistan; Minaka, master from Mauritius) and two master students as well as members of CCP—Li Longshan, Lv Mingwei attended a public activity—“Participate in garbage sorting, Wuhan is proud of you” in Health Valley Community of Caidian District, Wuhan City. It aimed to improve public’s awareness of environmental protection.
The garbage classification before it is stored, distributed and transported, can effectively improve the recycling rate and economic value, decrease consumption of land resources and maximize the utilization of waste resources. In order to make the residents to learn more about garbage classification, these students formed a "Volunteer Squad for the Publicity of Garbage Classification Knowledge" with staff in the community. To motivate everyone to actively participate in this work, they handed out brochures, organized garbage classification games and explained to the local residents about the significance of garbage classification and its methods.
In the end, the volunteer squad gathered the residents together and delivered a lecture to popularize knowledge of garbage classification, in the way they explained how to deal with food debris. Every resident showed their highly praise to the students’ lecture.
This activity not only enhanced the acknowledgement of garbage classification, making the concept of “green, low-carbon and environmental protection” deeply rooted in everyone’s heart, but also made strong connection among the volunteers from different countries. The international student Musa said, “I was so happy to see the community sorting garbage and that I was able to participate in it personally. I thought this could promote the recycling of resources and make the environment better.”
