10月18日，来自20多个不同国家的40多名国际学生齐聚友谊公寓留学生活动中心，参加由国际教育学院留学生办公室举办的“2016年秋国际学生迎新志愿者表彰大会”，旨在表彰在本学期迎新过程中做出突出贡献的国际学生志愿者。
大会由留办老师兰行行主持，国际教育学院副院长赵晓峰出席会议并致开幕词，“随着华中大的国际名声的提升，每年申请来我校学习的国际学生数量不断增长，我们也需要更强大的志愿者团队协助留学生办公室共同服务新生，帮助他们更好地适应新的环境和校园生活。”赵院长介绍道：“以前的迎新志愿者主要是中国学生，从今年春季开始，国际学生也加入迎新志愿者队伍，你们耐心温暖的服务给所有的新生留下了深刻的印象。”
接着王冰老师通过ppt回顾了志愿者从招募、培训、上岗等过程，生动的图片让大家回忆起自己在迎新现场忙碌的场景。他们引导新同学顺利办理了入住公寓手续、填写了各类入学表格、维护现场秩序、收取学生档案相关材料、教他们在HUB系统完成注册、帮助他们整理了申请办理居留许可所需的材料，甚至带他们去医院体检等等。语言上的优势和同理心让国际学生志愿者更容易让新生感到踏实和亲切。
在颁奖环节中，每个志愿者都获得了“优秀志愿者证书”，华科纪念明信片和中国风笔记本。接着，秘鲁学生胡歌，斯里兰卡学生的李兰香和阿富汗学生莫弘文作为学生志愿者代表发表志愿者感言，分享了他们做志愿者的故事和心得, 让更多的学生了解和学习了志愿服务的意义和乐趣，赢得在场听众的阵阵掌声。
“这几年我感受到留办的老师们在积极地提高他们的迎新质量和效率，而作为老生，我也看到了迎新工作的明显改善。我很乐意做志愿者去帮助新生，因为我们当初也是新生，我希望能够通过自己的方式回报当年为我们付出的人们，传递这份温暖。”李兰香介绍到，引起了很多志愿者的共鸣。
国际学生志愿者作为迎新的亮点之一将会继续保留和发扬，他们的加入不仅表明了留学生办公室在提高迎新服务质量方面的探索和思考，也表明国际学生在不断融入学校的学习、生活乃至校园服务等方方面面。
No National Boundary for Volunteers
Awarding Ceremony for International Volunteers in Welcoming the New Students Successfully Held
Oct.18th, over 50 international students from more than 20 countries gathered in the international student activity center of Friendship Apartment and participated in the Awarding Ceremony for International Volunteers in Welcoming the New Students in 2016 Autumn Semester held by the international students office, which aimed to honor the volunteers devoted in welcoming the new students in September.
Mr. Lan Hanghang presided over the ceremony, which began with an opening speech from Ms.Zhao, the vice dean of the School of International Education. ” With the increasing reputation of HUST in the global educational arena, we witness the continual growth in the number of international students on campus. A stronger team of volunteers therefore is required to assist the international student office in welcoming the new students from all over the world for sake that they could better adapt to the new environment and life here.” Ms. Zhao introduced further: ”The volunteers team mainly consisted of Chinese students before , but international students added new blood in this team since last semester, whose patient and warm service impress all the new students.”
The ceremony was continued by the speech from Ms. Wang that had reflected the whole process from volunteer recruitment, training and serving the positions at the orientation scene, where they were busy guiding the new to check in the students apartment, filling out the forms needed, maintaining the order, collecting materials for student files, assisting in HUB system online registration , sorting out the material required for residence permit application, and even taking them to hospital for physical examination and so forth. Advantage in language and empathy enabled the international volunteers better understood and supported the new student in need.
In the part and prize-awarding, every volunteers was issued with a certificate of Excellent Volunteer, HUST memorial postcards and Chinese traditional notebook. Afterwards, Hugo Pumacahua Chahuayo from Peru, Sujeewa Vijayanthi Polgampala Aregamalage from Sri Lanka and Mohammad Shari Wardak from Afghanistan as volunteer representatives shared their experiences and feelings in volunteering work, especially in welcoming the new students. Inspired by their stories, the audiences responded with a warm round of applause.
“ I can feel that the officers in ISO are striving to improve their work quality and efficiency all these years and fortunately, they made it. I’m pleased to serve the new students as a volunteer since I was a new student before and I hope I could pay back the people that helped me out then. ”
As one of the highlights in welcoming the new student, the team of volunteers will be remained and continue to expand and their participation in welcoming the new students, which not only displays the exploration and reflection of ISO in their work deployment, but also marks that the international students have deepened their exposure in the life, study and even campus service in HUST.
